I first saw Thebe Magugu’s work on the runway of AFI’s Fastrack show about two years ago, his work stood out for me then (read here) and I must say his debut collection didn’t disappoint.
Thebe showed at the most recent SS17 SAFW in Joburg with a collection he described as being “inspired by the idea of escaping into the wild. I was just fed up with all the pressures of day to day urban life and imagined a woman having to take to the great outdoors and surviving.”
The lookbook for the collection came out this week, titled Geology, with a notable feature on the Vogue Italia website. I love how everything was brought together in these images, the colours, styling and different shades of afro’s worn by the models. What really got me was the memories it brought about, from way back when I was that carefree young woman enjoying the games shown in the various images.
How fun and simple life was then.
Waking up to spend hours in the sun playing games like khati, m’gusha and di thini, wasn’t so good at that last one by the way (I feel that should have been enough of an indication I wouldn’t be any good at netball later but alas).
Thebe Magugu’s thoughtful collection perfectly reflects that carefree simple life, with light and airy, easy-wearing ensembles with flattering shapes; and trendy details like voluminous sleeves, some ruffling, high slits and blue denim.
A well rounded offering, and I look forward to getting myself one of his creations and seeing more of his work in future, definitely one to watch.
