My Heritage Day Rant

In the birth of our democracy, this day was changed from Shaka Day, to be South Africans Heritage Day, to encourage us as a nation to celebrate our cultural heritage and the diversity of our beliefs and traditions.

I believe the sooner we all acknowledge, accept and respect our differences, the sooner we will be able to get along better, love one another and live happily together. It may sound airy-fairy or foolishly idealistic, but there is no way there can be peace in living & working together, without respect for who the next person is and what they believe in.

Today is not braai day, coming together around the fire of a braai may be how we celebrate and enjoy the day being commemorated, but it does not replace what is being honored. The American celebrated Thanksgiving doesn’t become Turkey Day because they come together to eat turkey on the day.

Today is a Heritage Day, when we take the day to dig deep to discover what lies in our heritage that we might not know, today we celebrate our differences to teach and enlighten eachother on who & what we are, so we can get to know eachother better.

Happy Heritage Day ❤

  1. Well said Tokelo. I can’t agree with you more. It’s Heritage Day, which is way more than just braai. It’s about pausing and remembering who we are and where we ‘re coming from as South Africans, irrespective of race, gender, ethnicity and other demographics. Happy Heritage to you too!
